Upon the recommendation of our hotel next door, we booked a table for two at this popular restaurant in mid September known for their charcoal grilled meats and traditional Camargue regional fare. Simply put, the food was remarkable but the service was comically rude. If you don't speak French, brush up ahead of time and still prepare to be ignored or treated with disdain. The owner seated us on the charming terrace and then ignored us for 15 minutes before returning to take our wine and appetizer order. Our wine order was forgotten; then the wrong bottle was brought already opened. Sending it back didn't make us very popular with the owner who never returned to our table. We had to flag down various servers at every step of the process to order and receive our meal. We weren't alone. Other foreign couples we're struggling through their evening nearby. Meanwhile , French-speaking patrons were hovered over and promptly brought their dishes with friendly attentive service by the owner and staff. The only thing that kept us from walking out was our sense of humor and the outstanding dishes that eventually appeared at our table. Smoked salmon tartare so fresh and flavorful it brought tears to my eyes, crusty bread still warm from the oven, Carmargue Bull Bourguignon served with locally grown rice and a pot of tender roasted local potatoes, and a generous T-bone with morels, stuffed eggplant and a delightful sauce. Five stars for food, zero for service. If you have a thick skin and can tolerate rude service at least the food won't disappoint.

This is an easy one star review.  There really isn't anything positive to say about this restaurant.  The ambience is dreary, the place didn't even seem clean.  The food ranged from a mediocre tomato and burrata salad to a disgusting serving of escargots.  I know enough French to have explained to the server that I only ate 3 of the 13 tiny snails because they were cold, tough, tasteless, and had actually seemed to have gone bad.  She grabbed my plate and walked away and could obviously not have cared less.  I just don't have it in me to go on and on about how dismal every aspect of this meal was, I can only warn you to avoid this pathetic place at all cost.  There are a number of excellent restaurants in this beautiful city, and it seems to me you can rely on those with 4 or more Yelp stars and more than just a handful of reviews.  Stay far away from L'Affenage.  Far, far away.
